Brown Fried Rice
We read ‘Stone Soup’ recently. Our library was out of the original copy of ‘Stone Soup’ by Marcia Brown but we wanted to read it anyway,so we checked out the adaptation of the story book by John J. Muth.I love the watercolor pictures used to tell the stories in a shade of blue and gray, sort of set in,what looks like a foggy day.
This adapted story is set in China and involves three monks,Hok,Lok,Seiw who are landed in the village at the foothill of mountains.Instead of being greeted by villagers with open arms, they instead were greeted with skepticism, distrust and closed doors. They asked themselves this question,”What makes one Happy?Oldest and wisest monk,Siew, had an idea ,he came up with ‘Stone soup’ which ended up bringing the entire village close together.
Meanwhile,I asked the same question to my five year old daughter, her answer was “Playing with my friends”,then i repeated it to my 3 year old boy .His candid answer was “Yogurt with sprinkles”.Yes,my boy loves the yogurt with green and blue sprinkles !
We like the story so much that my daughter insisted to read it back to back and now it is in our amazon list,we are looking to buy the original copy of ‘Stone Soup’.
To go with wok roasted chicken,we made fried brown rice,in a same wok we roasted the chicken. All the leftover goodness was absorbed by the rice to make it even more happier.Let me confess,i am not a fan of brown rice but it is something i am trying to like because, yes, it is healthy and the amount of rice that we eat,my goal is to outnumber white rice with brown slowly.
In order to make it more appetizing, since it is completely inedible in its original cooked form to me,i added tons of vegetable.Well worth effort. My hubby liked it and my daughter ate it,even if not as cleanly as she would have the white rice but no complains. So i say,its a go.
