Poha

Poha

You must have heard me saying that Indians eat rice in every form. From breakfast to dinner. Now before you say anything, let me also say,at different time of the day, rice takes different form, which is completely  unrecognizable from one another. Here i am going to tell you,one of the way we eat rice in breakfast. Poha is one of the MOST popular breakfast dish of Maharashtra. What? You must have heard of Mumbai or Bombay. If not,you got to know Bollywood.Well all of them are related.Bollywood is in Mumbai(which is ‘Marathi’ translation of its exotic English name ‘Bombay’)which is the capital of Maharashtra. Are you still with me?I am so humming “Aamchi Mumbai” (‘My mumbai’ in Marathi)song with all this talk in my head ! Let me introduce you to the amazing world of ‘flattened/beaten’ rice called “Chura” in Hindi. It is parboiled rice which is rolled and pressed to transform  it into rice flakes.I remember my grandparents house  during our summer vacation.Rice is one of the main crop my grandparents grew.During our stay we watched, rice being flattened in what i would call  GIGANTIC mortar and...

Pumpkin Muffins

Pumpkin Muffins

I wanted to make muffins to give my daughter for school as well as for our breakfast this morning. So I hopped blog to blog but lacked ingredients for one or other which i liked. Then i noticed can of pumpkin puree staring at me,as i pulled out the drawer.Pumpkin Muffins were in order ! Woo Hoo !! Now the moment of truth:I am not a fan of pumpkin, nor is my family, in its natural stage and consistency.By that i mean, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake and kind are out but cookies, bread and muffins we will give a fair try. Verdict : It was DEVOURED very quickly.I packed it for her lunch and i had it for breakfast this morning.Hubby loved it and i can’t tell you about my son. What I love most about it: Walnut streusel. You MUST NOT miss it.Not only it makes it look appetizing(remember you eat from your eyes first).Every moist bite of it with streusel adds that ‘oomph’ to it. I decided on this recipe for pumpkin muffins, just with one...

Whole Wheat Pancake

Whole Wheat Pancake

What did your kindergartener(new season school goer)ate for breakfast this morning? Ours had whole wheat pancake with milk. Our girl usually eats her pancake by itself without any syrup and butter or anything.(I do not understand why).Let me also tell you,she was suppose to eat cereal with milk, just like any other day but last night i got lazy with dinner and all of us had breakfast for dinner.Pancakes.Seems like it is becoming norm for our Sunday night dinner.I made extra to last us for next morning breakfast. So now it may become our Monday morning breakfast !Winner. I have followed this pancake mix recipe forever and all of us like it and accustomed to it.We are gradually moving towards whole wheat/grain diet,so i made a switch and made a small batch of this whole wheat pancake mix.I was anxiously waiting for the verdict at the dinner table. Hubby: There is something different about this pancake.(doubtful and convinced that i have been sneaky) Me : like what? Hubby:It looks ‘Wheatish’.Is it whole wheat?(He knows the answer)...

Granola Cluster

Granola Cluster

Couple of weeks ago,i had the opportunity to help with  Vacation Bible School at the church we are visiting. If you know about VBS, you know it means early start in the morning. So some of the day,i may have coffee before i leave and if not,i would grab a bag of homemade granola to munch on the way.So one of that day,as i was munching,my friend,Keri, who i was helping, noticed and said,”You know what  i like better then granola? granola cluster, easier to eat on the go,we are always on the go.” She had a good point. So as you are reading this post,we are most likely on our road trip to the beach, praying that it doesn’t rain.Isn’t that odd that all the time that we are at home, praying for rain to get us out from drought,it remains dry as it could be and make a plan for beach and there is tropical depression forming in a gulf.We will take rain here in Texas anyday, not complaining.*Ahem*. I thought of Granola cluster for our...

Applesauce Bread

Applesauce Bread

My sister visited us for couple of days after long time and left this morning..When she was leaving,i wanted to make something for her take it with her to eat en-route or when she has a moment. So i baked Oatmeal Cranberry Walnut  cookies  and applesauce bread. This idea of making something to take on journey is deep routed Indian upbringing we all had.My parents ALWAYS prepared and still do,something for us to eat when we travel or after we reach the destination. It is not that you do not get food while you are traveling. You absolutely can buy plenty to eat, however it will lack the ‘taste of home’.Joy of eating Mom’s paratha and Bhujiya while i was cruising away from home, which took as long as 2 days of train journey back then, has always been heartwarming. I do not cook anything as elaborate as my mom and papa did for travel purpose, waking up as early as 3 A.M to make it fresh and warm if we are leaving home at 6 A.M and so on.It...

Whole Wheat Cinnamon Rolls

Whole Wheat Cinnamon Rolls

I love good cinnamon rolls.I think it is perfect for morning breakfast. So rightnow that my sister is visiting us,i decided to give a try to homemade cinnamon rolls. Most  cinnamon rolls i have tasted so far are regular all purpose flour based, glazed in icing.Very delicious.I wanted to give a whole wheat twist to it.So i hopped the blogs  for the ideas and sort of settled on this recipe. We were also playdating today with my dear friends and decided i could totally use the opportunity for taste testing. My assumption is they gave me their honest reviews and not being just nice to me.So based on 7 kids and 4 judging adults this is what i found out. As far as taste go,they didn’t know until i told them that it is whole wheat cinnamon rolls.Which tells me that density of whole wheat was not significantly noticeable.Or could it be that their taste buds where zapped by the sweetness, totally undermining the texture? It was not as flaky as what i have tasted with...
