If you are or you have a picky eater

If you are or you have a picky eater

I have learnt about the food culture here in stages.I was introduced to the concept of ‘canned’ vegetable/fruit/meal’,’meal in a box’,’frozen food’ to name some… After marrying my very American husband one of thing which i learnt is,”meal is not complete here without meat” and by meat it doesn’t have to be finger licking ribs or a bold piece  of steak.’Meat and Potatoes’ are sort of classic American fare for many here growing up. After having kids, my knowledge in food department increased and reading the list of ingredients became the part of grocery shopping.I became more aware of  ‘Food Allergy’. Though it wasn’t until that our kids started school that I have been reminded of  dominance of  ‘food allergy’ at every class party, end of the game snacks and any get together.I became familiar with very strategically marketed ‘kids meal’ and have been forced to think why chicken nuggets/hot dogs/mac and cheese are identifiable with kids meal?As a mom my responsibility to serve healthy meal  to my  family and challenge of ‘picky eaters’ is as real to me as it to...

Happy Resurrection Day

Happy Resurrection Day

“25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die”. John 11:25 I am celebrating Easter since I got married.Even then I didn’t do anything out of ordinary to mark this day.Couple of years later, kids added, kids growing,I wanted to incorporate more to the day.I want our kids to grasp what this day is all about.Hopping through the blogs,I decided to add a tradition to make cards. So I asked my daughter, who loves to color and draw,”Lets make some ‘Easter’ cards”.She got very excited..’Yes,I will draw some eggs,it will be cute Mom’..Hmmmm..I thought. So I asked,” Think about ‘Resurrection Card honey’.What comes in your mind?”.She said.,”hmmm…Jesus died for our sins..(pause)..on cross..(pause)..on the mountain.” Looking at her card,I asked her, what is ‘inside the tomb’.I was expecting it to be empty. She explained,”oh  just pretending..Jesus ‘was‘ there,he is not there ‘.We said out loud Matthew 28:6,our theme verse…..this is what she draw. You see I only tweaked the words and it...

Tale of Eggplants

Tale of Eggplants

Eggplant.I heard this word first time before my intended trip to US  decade ago.It was the part of vocabulary list in culture training, prepared for Indians S/W associates traveling to work onsite at US and I was the part of that group.Hmmmm…i thought fancy word for what i had known as ‘Brinjal’ in Indian english.’Aubergine’ as I later came to know its  ‘European’ Synonym. In Hindi we call it,’Baingan‘ and the people who hate this vegetable, distort it to say it as ‘Bay-goon'(meaning ‘of no quality’)as local slang.Funny, isn’t it? During  my first purchase of eggplants at supermarket here,i realized that saying it as ‘eggplant’ wasn’t enough,as I found out at the checking counter when the clerk looked through the long list of laminated sheets. It took him quite a while as most of them don’t know what vegetables it is to begin with.So you can guess it is not very popular vegetable among Americans.I also found out there are two distinct kind of eggplants sold here. Asian: Long,slander,non-bitter,soft inside,thin-skinned version is labeled as ‘Japanese’...

Foodie Journey

I created this blog on blogger little over 2 years ago and it existed in utter futility, breathed internet air for nothing…Years rolled and many things  happened, like pinterest 🙂 .Encouraged by some other friends,i decided to put an end  my  long time procrastination, i started, what i call Project 365(366 for this year for all you picky ).I decided that i will take picture everyday of whatever it is.1 or 2 or many..So today when my darling husband suggested ,taking pics of the food would help him select what  he would like for dinner.Yes to answer the age old profound question “Whats for dinner?”, which i face every evening . And thats when i had an epiphany, may be i should revive this fruitlessly breathing, merely existing blog which i created years ago and turned it into a foodie journal.Listing food which i make on regular basis and we can look back  for future menu planning.I am too lazy to do menu planning or stick with it,if i do indeed plan one.I thought may be i...
