Sheer Pira

Sheer Pira

Last week i found out that Muslims around the world celebrated the Eid -ul-Zuha.I grew up in Hindu-Muslim community in India.Schools are out on this day there.I had the opportunity to witness the festivity growing up. My prayer through this : May the people worship one true god,The Lord. ‘Bakreed’ is the term that I am familiar with.Literally means “Bakra Eid” .”Bakra” meaning goat.On this day, Muslim faithful sacrifice the animal. One third of the meat is kept for the family, one third is distributed among family and friends and one third is given to the poor. So I decided to close out our Afghanistan tour on sweet note.Though “Firni” (thick milk pudding)is the most popular dessert of Afghanistan,I chose a candy like dessert  called “Sheer Pira”. Sheer Pira is very sweet cardmom scented candy like milk dessert, hard and chewy at the same time. Traditionally it is made with whole cream milk powder. All I could find was non-fat milk powder in my grocery store, so that’s what i used....

Lemon Squares

Lemon Squares

What is your go to dessert recipe? This is the question i asked myself, when i signed up to bring dessert last week. Lemon squares are my go to dessert recipe during summer. Not only this is our family  favorite, these squares are very easy to put together and full proof. It does not have flour(listed as ingredient),another big plus for me.Why do i say that?baked goods with whole wheat flour,i have found unpredictable at times and i like to avoid that when i have no plan B. This recipe is based on Martha Stewart’s lime squares with very minor tweak. I used almonds instead of pistachios. I used 1/4 cup lemon juice instead of 1/2 cup of lime juice as the recipe calls for.I like the hint of lemon but not too much. To make it gluten free, eliminate the graham crackers and use nuts and almonds, ground for crust. One piece of advice, make it night before, not 2 hours before you have to leave. You will save yourself last minute jitters.Just saying. Variation  On my son’s birthday,he...

Carrot Halwa Blondie

Carrot Halwa Blondie

Hubby and I celebrated our wedding anniversary last month. We kept it low key and enjoyed  family dinner at our back patio, with array of our favorite dishes. I was looking for a dessert which echos the fusion of American and Indian taste buds. Thats when i  came across Carrot Halwa Blondie. It has all the elements of carrot halwa but instead of being Halwa, it is cake like, sweet dessert.I knew my husband would take a bite on it 🙂 Original recipe is for bar and uses 11 by 15 inch pan.I used 9 by 13.So mine was not a bar but it was more of moist cake which we liked. I also used Whole wheat pastry flour and coconut sugar for the recipe. I didn’t shred the carrots.I microwaved and coarse pureed it in blender. It was 1/4 cup more then the recipe asked for.I just had more carrots and i took a chance. Didn’t wanted it to go waste 🙂 PrintCarrot Halwa Blondie Ingredients2 cups Whole Wheat Pastry Flour 3 leveled teaspoons double-acting baking powder 2-1/4...

Peanut Butter B & W Cookies

Peanut Butter B & W Cookies

Our Christmas break just started and i have been looking forward to get a stop on running around. So on the weekend before Christmas,i decided to get my baking  on.I have not been able to do much of that with busy schedules. I have never made cookies with peanut butter on it.We like peanut butter in our house but not crazy about it.Recipe came from the back of the Toll House Milk Chocolate Chips pack.Recipe was meant for the double peanut butter  and milk chocolate chip cookies.I didn’t had peanut butter chips,so i simply used white milk chocolate chips along with brown one.So now you  know how i named it 🙂 This cookie has a flavor of peanut butter but not overpowering .Its very sweet and i will totally try the recipe by cutting down the sugar by 1/4 cup. I must warn you,it is very ADDICTIVE. Better even with mug of hot cocoa !Seriously,my family was eating as breakfast. No it is not a healthy thing  to do,just thought i...

Whole Wheat Chocolate Cake

Whole Wheat Chocolate Cake

December is a birthday month in our family.Every week there is one birthday. The biggest one is Jesus’s birthday,of course 🙂 Second to that,we celebrated my sweet hubby’s birthday past week :-).It is very hard to surprise my husband.Only way i can successfully (for the most part)surprise him is by serving the food,he has not anticipated. So this time, kids and geared up for  the big day.My son picked up “Avenger” plate to serve whereas my daughter couldn’t look past the princess. They picked up a gift and gotta birthday card for daddy 🙂 So,next big thing was the cake.I was mulling over the posts and internet to see what kind of cake i would make.In the midst of that,i asked him,(yes,i told him,i have hard time surprising him),so what kind of cake he would like?He answered,”Chocolate Cake, the old, traditional,BORING kind :-),which knowing him, somewhat translated into No nuts, certainly not when you can not avoid biting on it. No Coffee though we love the drink  but smell of coffee from cake is big NO-NO Coconut or...
