What did your kindergartener(new season school goer)ate for breakfast this morning?

Ours had whole wheat pancake with milk.Our girl usually eats her pancake by itself without any syrup and butter or anything.(I do not understand why).Let me also tell you,she was suppose to eat cereal with milk,just like any other day but last night i got lazy with dinner and all of us had breakfast for dinner.Pancakes.Seems like it is becoming norm for our Sunday night dinner.I made extra to last us for next morning breakfast.So now it may become our Monday morning breakfast !Winner.

I have followed this pancake mix recipe forever and all of us like it and accustomed to it.We are gradually moving towards whole wheat/grain diet,so i made a switch and made a small batch of this whole wheat pancake mix.I was anxiously waiting for the verdict at the dinner table.

Hubby: There is something different about this pancake.(doubtful and convinced that i have been sneaky)

Me : like what?

Hubby:It looks ‘Wheatish’.Is it whole wheat?(He knows the answer)

Me:Well,don’t be prejudiced(convincing ,lulling tone).Give it a try and see if you like it.

Verdict from kids and hubby : Well liked and eaten just as much as ‘all purpose’ version.Mission whole wheat pancake success.Yay !!!

  • There is hardly any difference in taste.It does look ‘wheatish’ but it is soft and fluffy.Not significantly dense to make taste difference.Both of our kids ate it without any complain.
  • I didn’t had buttermilk,so i added one tablespoon of white vinegar to 1 cup of milk,as it says in recipe.
  • I usually add flax seeds to the pancake mix.No One notices it.
  • I will experiment to substitute the ‘all purpose’ with ‘white whole wheat flour’ in my old recipe to see how it works.I mostly do not keep buttermilk in hand.

Whole Wheat Pancakes


    Whole Wheat Pancake Mix
  1. 6 cups white whole wheat flour
  2. 1/3 cup sugar(regular,white)
  3. 2 tablespoons baking powder
  4. 1 tablespoon baking soda
  5. 2 teaspoons salt
  6. Make Pancake
  7. 1 large egg, whisked
  8. 1 Tablespoon White Vinegar
  9. 1 cup milk
  10. 1 tablespoon butter
  11. 1 cup pancake mix


  1. Mix everything under pancake mix and store in air tight container in your freezer.
  2. Pancake
  3. Add tablespoon or vinegar to milk,if you do !NOT,have buttermilk,else use 1 cup buttermilk.
  4. Add it to the rest of the pancake ingredients.
  5. Heat a griddle.
  6. Spoon using big size icecream/cookie scooper/laddle.
  7. Cook it at low,until you see bubble coming out from the top.
  8. Flip it to other side and cook it for another 30 seconds.
  9. Enjoy with maple syrup.
