My ‘Easter to Resurrection’ story

Posted by on Mar 29, 2012 in Storytelling | 2 comments

Let me begin by saying,i wasn’t planning on writing any story, let alone ‘My Easter Story’.I was writing the post for the ‘Easter Spring party’,I had blast hosting couple of days ago and it got too long and distinctly disconnected from the ‘food’.Now you are thinking hmmmmmm… I didn’t grew up celebrating Easter.I grew up Hindu in secular world.I didn’t know anyone besides ‘sisters’ of missionary school i attended, who celebrated ‘Easter’.I knew  first comes ‘Good Friday’ and then on Sunday you have ‘Easter’.I always wondered why ‘Good’ Friday is ‘Good’ when it is observed in such  ‘somber’.I think I have an idea now. I do not however remember hearing the...

Cake Pops and Easter Basket

Posted by on Mar 28, 2012 in Dessert | 1 comment

Have you heard of cake pops?I was introduced with CUTENESS GALORE called ‘Bakerella’ couple of years ago.Such a unique twist to the cake.I can’t get over how cute they are.It wasn’t until now that i made it though.I have heard the horror stories of making cake pops at home. And i must say they are all true but cakepops are still doable without fretting :-).Beware,this is going to be a long post.So do not blame me in the end,I warned you. My friend Stacey was ‘getting rid’ of her Bakerella’ cake pops book and she ‘entrusted’ me with its new ownership.I WAS THRILLED.Do you see anything wrong with that picture?...

Chicken Stir fry with Black Bean Sauce

My husband and I are big on Chinese food.Growing up,i had Indo Chinese dishes.I still think think they are best.So now that we have moved out from the city,we don’t let the opportunity for good Chinese food pass by easily. There is a ‘Hunan’ Chinese restaurant in a city, called ‘Mencius’ and i love love their Chicken in Black Bean Sauce.First time i ordered this dish because i couldn’t find the type of noodle dish i was looking for, in their menu.Pleasantly,it did not disappoint me.Since then i have tried time and again to replicate this dish at home and i am never successful. When i make/order Chinese dishes,it has to  appeal to me color and...

Spiced up Veggie hash

Posted by on Mar 21, 2012 in Indian, Veggies | 3 comments

Hash browns..this name does not convey me anything. It is shredded potato dish, commonly served with breakfast. If it is cut in cubes,it is sold as ‘country’ hash browns. So for my breakfast for dinner meal,I thought to dress up the ‘country hash brown’ in Indian way.I did just that.I used Yellow bell pepper, peas and tomato to spice up the key ingredient potatoes. Now with ‘peas’ I was taking a huge risk.I am the only person in our house who love ‘peas’ and I get the impression that ‘peas’ are not very well liked here,I mean really not liked..Only logical reason I can think of is because they never tasted my mom’s ‘Ghughani’,best made...

Yogurt Mustard Dip

Posted by on Mar 19, 2012 in Condiments | 2 comments

I make this quick dip to go with Samosa, Aloo chop, Pakoda, Falfal or topping on Grilled Chicken Tacos, you get the idea.Super simple and healthy too.Not much of recipe here.If you are increasing the amount of yogurt to 1 cup, increase the mustard to 1/2 tsp.I prefer to use ‘Black mustard seeds'(Indian ‘Rai’),ground in mortar-pestle.Black mustard  has more kick to it,more pungent,so little goes long way.If it is too spicy for your taste, add some yogurt to adjust the taste. Mung Bean Salad

Posted by on Mar 16, 2012 in Salad | 0 comments

Mung beans as they are called here,is one of my favorite kind of lentil(yeah,we say it ‘Dal’ in hindi, which translates to ‘pulse’ in Indian english and ‘lentil’ in American ,so there you have it).I like it because it is so versatile,in what you can do with it.You can sprout them and it becomes totally new species with varied uses.Of course, there are  different ways you can dress the ‘whole Mung’ with green skin on or ‘Yellow Mung’ with green skin peeled of. When I do the Indian grocery,I almost always get the lentils and spices and most of the times these lentil comes in big bags,so I am left with lot of...
